DCH REVISES DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Dearborn County Hospital’s diabetes education programs have been revised.  Information regarding the various programs and classes available are as follows:

Living with Diabetes is presented on Tuesday and Thursday each week (except for the fourth week of the month) from noon until 4:00 p.m. in the hospital’s conference rooms.  Classes are for adults who have been recently diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes or who were previously diagnosed but never attended a diabetes education class.  Topics include methods of control, monitoring glucose levels, healthy eating and numerous other subjects applicable to managing diabetes. 

In addition, Living with Diabetes will be presented on a quarterly basis on two consecutive Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the conference rooms.  Scheduled dates are February 20 and 27, May 15 and 22, September 11 and 18, and November 13 and 20.

Instructors for Living with Diabetes are Certified Diabetes Educators Paula Rossell, R.D., C.D., C.D.E., DCH Clinical Dietitian, and Jennifer Beer, R.N., C.D.E., DCH Clinical Instructor. 

The Diabetes Management Review Class is offered the fourth Thursday of each month from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the conference rooms.  This class offers a review of materials for adults who have previously attended diabetes education.

A class for expectant mothers with gestational diabetes is also available at the hospital.  The Gestational Group Class is presented every Tuesday from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

All of the above listed classes are recognized by the American Diabetes Association as meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education. Dearborn County Hospital also offers a free diabetes support group, Moving Toward Control.  It is designed for adults and is led by Certified Diabetes Educator Shawn Crandell, R.D., C.D., C.D.E., DCH Clinical Dietitian.  Topics include physical activity, nutrition, weight management and glucose control.  This educational and entertaining group meets in the DCH conference rooms on Tuesdays, four times a year, at 5:30 p.m.:  March 16, June 29, September 28 and November 16.   For more information, please call Mrs. Crandell at (812) 537-8163 or (800) 676-5572, ext. 8163.
