LUNG CANCER AWARENESS
MONTH IS A GOOD TIME TO SCHEDULE CT LUNG CANCER SCREENING
For a decade now, Dearborn County Hospital has been encouraging
smokers, former smokers and those exposed to significant secondhand
smoke to have a 20-second helical CT (computerized axial tomography)
lung cancer screening. The screening, which is noninvasive and
takes less than a minute to perform, can detect tumors that are far
too small to be seen by standard X-rays.
“What’s critical is early detection,” said Roger Howard, DCH
Director of Clinical Services and Facilities. “The earlier a
cancerous tumor is identified, the greater the opportunity for that
individual’s life to be prolonged or saved. Since DCH began the
screenings 10 years ago, we have seen individuals who have survived
lung cancer because their disease was detected early.”
During November, which is the American Lung Association’s National
Lung Cancer Awareness Month, smokers or former smokers are
encouraged to speak with their physician about getting a 20-second
helical CT scan. Individuals with a history of 10 pack-years or
greater (one pack of cigarettes a day for 10 years, two packs a day
for five years, etc.) are appropriate for the screening. The scan
is also recommended for those who have been exposed to significant
secondhand smoke.
The fee for the lung cancer screening is $150 and is usually not
covered by insurance. A physician’s order is required. Individuals
may make appointments for a helical CT lung cancer screening at
either Dearborn County Hospital or the Dearborn County Hospital
Harrison Outpatient Diagnostic Center.
