ANNUAL PUMPKIN CONTEST
AT DCH HAS RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES
A record
breaking number of entries, 203 pumpkins, were registered in this
year’s Pumpkin Decorating Contest at the Dearborn County Hospital
Physical Therapy Department.
This year, the
DCH Physical Therapy Department sponsored two contests—the well
known one at the hospital and a second event at its facility in the
DCH Harrison Outpatient Diagnostic Center. A combined total of 234
pumpkins were entered in both competitions. For each pumpkin
registered, Dearborn County Hospital donated $10 to the American
Cancer Society (ACS) for breast cancer research and education. This
year the donation made by DCH to the American Cancer Society for the
pumpkin contests totaled $2,340.
Each year, the
entries in the pumpkin decorating contests get more imaginative,
elaborate and complex. Some of this year’s entries represented
cartoon characters, animals and even buildings. Winners in the
three divisions for the contest at Dearborn County Hospital were:
-
second grade and younger: Kendal Brue’s
first grade class at St. Lawrence School, with its friendly
snowman
-
third through 10th grade:
Kassie Coy’s eighth grade class at St. Lawrence School, with a
haunted house and cemetery
-
11th and 12th grades
and adults: the Physical Therapy Department of Woodland Hills
Care Center, with a cleverly segmented caterpillar climbing a
tree branch.
The contest
took place during an open house in the DCH Physical Therapy
Department. Visitors met with the hospital staff and Terri Jones,
Community Development Director of the American Cancer Society
Southeast Indiana Division. Ms. Jones has attended the PT open
house regularly for years to provide information on the
organization’s efforts in breast cancer research and education.
Both National Physical Therapy Month and National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month occur in October.
“It wouldn’t
seem like October at Dearborn County Hospital if we didn’t have the
pumpkin contest!” joked Ed Brush, MSPT/ATC, DCH Physical Therapy
Director. “Seriously, we are thrilled that so many people took the
time to participate this year. Their continued interest
demonstrates an ongoing dedication to both breast cancer research
and physical therapy.”
A week prior to
the DCH contest, a new pumpkin contest was initiated at DCH Harrison
Physical Therapy. This event featured 31 entries. Attending this
event was special guest Amy Wilson, Income Development Coordinator
for the Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society.
The winners in
the Harrison contest were:
-
second grade and
younger: Mia Neckel’s second grade class at Crosby Elementary,
with a painted green witch
-
third through 10th
grade: Grace Lohman, age 10 of Harrison, with a classic
carved jack-o’-lantern
-
11th and 12th grades and adults: Deborah
Martin and her co-workers from the Harrison offices of Michael
Uhde, D.M.D., M.S., with a spider and its eight legs.
