The Cincinnati Affiliate of
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will receive approximately
$3,000 thanks to this year’s Dearborn County Hospital
Physical Therapy Department’s Pumpkin Decorating
Contest. DCH contributed $10 to Komen for each of the
294 pumpkins entered. To date, Dearborn County Hospital
has donated $18,520 to cancer research and service
organizations through the event.
Initiated in 2002, the contest
which is open to the public, was created to recognize
National Physical Therapy Month and National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, both of which are celebrated in
October.
“This is our 11th
year of sponsoring the contest. What started out as a
small competition among hospital departments has grown
into a regional event,” noted Ed Brush, MSPT/ATC, DCH
Director of Physical Therapy. “As always, we are
grateful for the many individuals, schools, businesses
and organizations who entered pumpkins or donated prizes
or refreshments.”
Judges selected winning pumpkins
from three age groups. This year’s top prize winners
were:
-
Second grade and younger—Jillian Harris for Fairy
Godmother.
-
Third through sixth grades—Jane Brack’s fifth grade
class at St. Lawrence School for Mrs. Brack’s
Flock.
-
Seventh grade through adult—DCH Credit Union for
Jack Skellington of The Nightmare Before
Christmas.
Honorable mentions went to
Sharon Roark-Chesser’s Mohawk Pumpkin and the
Waters of Dillsboro-Ross Manor’s Snake and
Jack-O’-Lantern.
Visitors to the open house
included Jud McMillin, State Representative for Indiana
District 68; and special guests Terri Jones, Community
Program Representative for the American Cancer Society,
Lower Eastern Indiana Area Service Center; Amy Weber,
Community Health Programs Manager for Komen; and Kelly
Ferreira, RN, FNP, Nurse Navigator for the DCH Breast
Care Center.
Little Caesars of Lawrenceburg
are treating three classrooms to pizza for having the
most entries in the contest. Mrs. Brack’s class,
Lollipops & Rainbows in Aurora and the seventh graders
of Ohio County Elementary in Rising Sun will each
receive gift cards for pizzas.
