Dearborn County Hospital and the American
Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will present a new one day
Drivers’ Safety Program on Wednesday, September 9, from noon to
4:00 p.m. in the Ohio Room of the hospital. Led by Pam
Puterbaugh, R.N., DCH Occupational Health Nurse, the program
allows participants to receive comprehensive instruction, view
videos and join group discussions.
No written or driving tests are required
and participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.
Drivers 50 years of age and older are eligible to attend.
“Mature drivers are advised to take this
class every three years due to changes in state laws regarding
driving and because of new technology,” Mrs. Puterbaugh
explained. “Some of the recent updates to the Edition 6
curriculum include how overall fitness affects driving, the
challenges of city vs. rural driving and warning signs of unsafe
driving.”
The course is designed to help older
drivers compensate for age related physical changes and possible
declining perceptual skills, and to educate participants about
how to reduce traffic violations, crashes and chances for
injury.
Most older drivers do not commit traffic
violations such as speeding or drunk or reckless driving. Some
mature drivers may have problems when involved in situations
requiring quick responses, full vision and interaction with
other motorists. Typical violations include failure to yield
the right-of-way, improper turning, incorrect lane changing,
passing and entering/exiting the interstate.
