Pre-Procedure Checklist

  • Arrangements must be made in advance for your transportation to and from the hospital.
  • If you are receiving sedation, you must have a responsible adult to accompany you home.
  • Public transportation is not acceptable unless a responsible adult is with you.
  • Check with your doctor concerning blood thinners such as aspirin, Coumadin, Plavix, Advil, ibuprofen or fish oil.  Our pre-admission nurse will instruct you regarding your heart, high blood pressure, and/or diabetes medications according to anesthesia guidelines.
  • Notify your physician’s office if you develop a cold, cough, fever or a rash near your surgical site.
  • Make arrangements for your children’s care while you are here.
  • Confirm that a family member or adult friend will be available to routinely check on you at home following your hospital stay.

Evening Prior to Procedure

  • For your safety, DO NOT eat, drink, smoke or chew anything after midnight the night prior to your procedure.  This includes chewing gum and tobacco.
  • Avoid shaving or using a depilatory cream (such as Nair™) on or around your surgical site.

Day of Procedure

  • Brush your teeth but do not swallow any water.
  • You may bathe or shower prior to your procedure.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing and low-heeled shoes.
  • Remove contact lenses prior to procedure. Bring your contact lens supplies or wear your glasses.
  • Remove dentures and hair accessories prior to procedure.
  • Remove jewelry, makeup or nail polish.
  • Hearing aids MAY be worn during most procedures.
  • Avoid shaving or using a depilatory cream (such as Nair™) on or around your surgical site.
  • Bring with you (if applicable):
    • List of current medications (including the dose and frequency)
    • Insurance card(s)
    • Medical Advance Directive (such as Living Will, Medical Power of Attorney)
    • History and physical form
    • CPAP Machine
    • Inhaler(s)
    • Crutches, Walker, Brace(s)
    • Favorite toy, blanket, pillow or toddler cup (for children)
  • LEAVE VALUABLES AT HOME
